What does the test involve?

Your test will be conducted at your local flight school with an Assessor who is an experienced pilot and Aviation English specialist. It will begin with a general conversation about your flying and then involve a variety of audio recordings, images and stimulus questions to put you at ease and give you the best opportunity to demonstrate your English proficiency.

The test will be tailored to suit the flying environment you are most familiar with, Class G or Class D. The test takes around 25 minutes.

Two assessors will then review the interview recording and make an independent assessment of your proficiency against the six ICAO criteria:

  • pronunciation
  • grammatical structures and sentence patterns
  • vocabulary
  • fluency
  • comprehension
  • interactions while communicating.

The test has been specifically developed by the Aviation English Assessment Association for overseas students in Australian flight schools at the pre-licence stage of their training.
